Bill Wax began his radio career in the late 1970s at KOPN in Columbia, Missouri, where he later served as program director. He also worked as program director and hosted a blues and R&B show at KBOO in Portland, Oregon. In Washington, D.C., he hosted a weekly blues show on WPFW, which evolved into “The Blues Plate Special,” a daily lunchtime blues program. He also served as Executive Producer of National Programming for Pacifica Radio. In 1999, he was instrumental in the creation and launch of Sirius XM’s BB King’s Bluesville channel, serving as its founding program director and lead DJ. He played a key role in shaping the channel’s sound and persona, and his programming had a significant impact on the careers of many blues artists, with some receiving royalty checks for the first time. After retiring from Sirius XM, he returned to radio as a volunteer at a local station, WPFW, in Washington, D.C. He currently hosts the show “Roots and Fruits” on WPFW on Saturdays. He served as Chairperson of the Board of Directors for The Blues Foundation for some time. His career spans decades, marked by a deep passion for blues and roots music, making him a respected figure in the radio and blues communities, and in this blog post, he will seek to continue to inform, engage, and entertain fans of the blues around the world.
